European policies for renewable energy, energy efficiency, & climate change policies

The CPUC Thought Leaders Series is proud to present Claude Turmes, Member of the European Parliament, and Vice President, Group of the Greens/European Free Alliance. Mr. Turmes is considered by many as a leader in developing Europe’s ambitious energy efficiency programs, the guiding light behind Europe’s proactive Renewable Energy Directive, and a strong proponent for climate change mitigation.

Mr. Turmes will describe his vision for Europe’s global leadership on “European policies for renewable energy, energy efficiency, and climate change policies - lessons to be learned", followed by an interactive question-and-answer session with the audience.

Claude Turmes has been an MEP in the Green/EFA Group in the European Parliament since 1999, and a Vice-President of the group since 2002. He is responsible for the coordination of energy policy within the group and he was Parliament’s rapporteur on the second directive on the liberalisation of the energy market and the directive for the promotion of renewable energy in Europe. He has also launched the concept of “Energy Intelligent Europe” with the aim of promoting European initiatives in the area of energy efficiency along with the establishment of a European Agency for energy efficiency.
