The last High-Tech Committee was the occasion to discover one of our members’ innovative work. Founder and CEO of Vega Vista and Neuroptical, Inc., Sina Fateh is an entrepreneur and inventor of vision-related technologies.
Using a sheet of paper with a low contrast, Sina showed us how vision is the result of different parameters: not only size, but also color, contrast, shape, motion and 3D vision… we have two eyes but perceive only one image. Indeed, eyes are only a little part of vision as 90% of it depends on image processing in the brain. Given that, it was discovered 300 years ago that we are able to improve the vision by improving its image processing at brain level. Eyes are a window giving access to the brain.
Sina Fateh focused his researches on low vision caused by Amblyopia “lazy eye” in children, an illness concerning about 3 % of the population. It is today possible to treat it by using image enhancement techniques, more particularly image separation and definition. Video games and TV are used as a way to improve and stimulate a precise part of the brain. The medical applications are promising thanks to retina transplant, using image processing chips or even telescopes.
Surprisingly, investors are now coming from consumer market. In fact, 3D TV is becoming a big success in Japan but people watching it a long time experience vision pain. To correct it, Sina Fateh’s software allows 3D technologies to adapt to everyone’s vision particularities so as to make the image clear and comfortable to watch. Opportunities are various, from 3D goggles for iPod to vision enhancement training for pilots.
